And continuing with reverse alphabetical order, next comes my (Erin's) favorite (and only) sister, Robin Sweeney. As a young tyke, I chose to smile at Robin before anyone else, which pretty much solidified the bond between us for life. Through the years, Robin has given me sage advice about everything from punk rock (The Clash ruled in 1979) to bibliography verification (see Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga). How could I get married in front of lots of people without her being up at the front with me?
What can you say about a friend who takes the term and brings its meaning new clarity for you? Michael Straus has been a friend who has been there with me to share good times and bad, (both mine and his own). Has been willing to share his wisdom, and opinions, and not take offense when such offerings are ignored. He is willing to admit weakness (especially mine) and to always have a smile and a welcoming word. His homemade beer sucks (more often than not) but it's always fun making it. And I guess it would be honest of me to say that if the world could handle more than one Michael Straus, I would want to be him when I grow up. Fortunately for me, the world can't.

My friendship with Derek Powazek started when I cast him to play a gangster in his freshman year of high school. He loved playing the role and I loved him in the part. Since then we have shared many (mis)adventures and learning experiences. Without him I wouldn't be doing many of the things that I do these days (like designing this website). He has been a kind and supportive friend who continually amazes me with his talents and insight. And I can grow a beard and he can't.
Oh dear G-d, what can I say about Carrie Lawrence that won't cause her to either cry or hit me? She is my oldest friend who has always been willing to learn, explore, try, tease, enjoy, plot, plan, talk, overwhelm, and share (in no particular order). She's a hard woman to tease because she'll do things that would make a Barnum and Bailey trained clown blush (and she has made a Barnum and Bailey clown blush!). Carrie is my defintion of "good folk." I wouldn't trade her in for a mountain of gold.
It was the first week of my freshman year at Georgetown, and I was sitting in a stiflingly stuffy room for my physics class. About ten minutes into a lecture by a professor who looked like he came straight out of a Far Side cartoon, a cool guy (obviously, not a freshman) sauntered into the room. He was holding a foam cup that held a thick, rich, cold shake. And all through the long, hot, boring class, I sat, watching the guy drink this shake. After class, a cute blond boy (very obviously a fellow freshman) asked whether I had noticed the cool milkshake guy, and would I want to join him in a quest to find the source or icy liquid? I said yes, and from then on, Matthew Kamins and I have been the best of buddies. Who knew a chocolate milkshake would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship?
Last (but not least, and not first!) is Liz Appleby. One of the best roommates a girl could have through the excitement of graduate school field trips (broken foot? not very tasty shrimp [see Michael Straus's entry above]? no problem!), Liz is the sharpest knife in the drawer that I've ever met. When not writing about XML (it's a computer thing -- don't ask) "for fun and sport," Liz often puts her brains to work solving the larger conundrums of life, including plot solutions for various television shows. Would I plan and go through this wedding without her? Yes. Would I want to? No way.
